Distance is a massive piece of music integrating the more mellow sonic expeditions of Pink Floyd with the sudden intrepid swoops into musical peaks and valleys preferred by cotemporaries and label-mates, Colour Haze. This is all this captured in a pristine production job that captures the intermingling fury and gentle roll of a shifting universe that alternately recalls Sun Ra with a Thom Yorke commercial appeal.
I don’t know for which sun Ahkmed has set it’s coordinates, but I have to admit, the second day post surgery to patch up my rotator cuff I put on “Distance” and I must say (without encouraging it’s use outside of it’s FDA-mandated indication) that Distance goes exceedingly well with 10mg of OxyContin. John-Paul Caligiuri’s Spartan, fluid jazz drumming coupled with guitarist Carlo Iacovino alternating juxtapositions between the unfettered power of launch and the shimmering beauty of orbit would normally be a lot to take in, but spread over the course of 8 or nine minutes per song, the disparities in texture and mood within each song get easier to digest.
